Become a freelance journalist

Many talented people dream of becoming freelance journalists, and they would do anything in their power to make their dream come true.  They would do anything it takes, and they would go through any stages needed in order to become what they want.

It’s never too early

Let’s analyze the following case study. James, an aspiring writer, cares about what happens around him, about people, about society, about social and political issues. He wants to dedicate his career to freelance journalism, and to report to the world on what is happening in our society day by day. He knew he wanted to become a freelance journalist since he was a teenager. While in high school, James used to write for his school paper. He paid attention to everything was going on around him and wrote about it. His writing was sharp and pinpointing, and everybody appreciated it. Quickly, due to his talent and astuteness, he became the editor in chief of the school newspaper. In one of his articles, he would expose an injustice done to a fellow student. In another article, he would cover an important event his high school was involved in. In other articles, he would praise for the good teachers and would criticise the not so good ones. Nothing would escape his sharpness, and every important event that affected the life of their high school and their local community would be reported by James in the school paper.

So James knew from his youngest years that he wanted to become a freelance journalist, and was determined to do anything to follow his dream. The next step he took was outside the high school newspaper circle, when he entered a national contest for junior freelance journalists, and won it with his outstanding talent. Then other writing contests came along, which he entered and won. And so, his great talent as a writer, his extensive experience as a journalist for the school newspaper, his awards he won at different writing contests, brought him a scholarship to a reputed journalism school. His career as a journalist hadn’t even properly started yet, but he already had significant success in his way to become a freelance journalist.

During his university years James started to write a social blog, focusing on important social and political events happening day by day. He interviewed public persons, wrote about their social doings, exposed their weaknesses and praised their outstanding qualities. He was just and objective. His writing caught attention of many readers and followers, who commented on his blog, showing their admiration for his writing, his sharpness, his astuteness.

Follow your dream

Then after graduation, he was ready to launch his career as a freelance journalist “for real”. He started to apply for different freelance journalism opportunities. He was only a university graduate but his resume was already strong enough to help him get into the publishing world as a freelance journalist. He had done everything was possible for him to prepare his path in becoming a freelance journalist, and so freelance writing opportunities did not hesitate to come along. He started to build and strengthen his career by writing for online and print publications. Just as he did in high school, he dedicated his freelance articles to social and political events and to important public persons. His written word started to spread, he became better and better known as a journalist, the number of his readers and followers grew exponentially. He brought his  own contribution to society by bringing news to his readers.

Surely there are other people passionate about science and writing, so start making friends with other science bloggers. Read and follow science blogs. Do not hesitate to comment on other science blogs, and those bloggers will follow you in return, and they will post their comments on your blog as well. This way you will get a greater online expose among online readers, and most importantly – among those who share the same passion and interests with you.

Read science forums

The internet is the greatest source of information, so do not hesitate to use it at its full capacity. Search for science forums, and join online science communities to discuss science topics with other forumists. You could also promote your blog on science forums. Just make sure you respect and follow the rules each time.

Promote your science blog on social networks

Most probably you already have a Facebook account, so use your Facebook profile to promote your blog. Set up a Facebook link on your blog, and like each article you post on your blog, so that other Facebook users could see and like them too. Also, use other social networks for promoting your science writing, like Twitter, Digg, Stumbe Upon, and other social sites.

Start writing outside your blog

Now it’s time to move on. Your blog was a writing exercise, but what you need now is to progress. Start posting articles on writing websites. Some of them do not require any testing, as they function on a sign-in and write basis. It is an easy way to get more exposure on the internet. Many writing websites are structured by categories, so stick to the science categories. It might not be a good idea to make a scramble of articles on different topics, even though sometimes you are tempted to. You want to be a freelance science writer, so write science and focus on what you have to do. Once you’ve gained more experience and confidence as a science writer, apply for even better writing jobs. It is time to make money out of your writing, so apply for writing positions. Submit your articles to science magazines, both online and print. Do not miss any opportunity that comes along.

So you have to be really careful when it comes to what you decide to share and give away on your Facebook account. Use this tool for professional purposes and to promote your content. Every time you post a new online article, “like” it on Facebook (even though it’s your own), and other people will “like” it too. Also, send out invitations to your Facebook friends to “like” your online columns and content, and surely they will want to help you out by liking your content and this way helping promote it.

Another way you can use your Facebook account is to get friends with writers. Best-seller writers are humans too, just as humans as each of us is, and due to the internet, which is a connecting people tool, they are not so unreachable nowadays like they maybe used to be decades ago. Now writers (and celebrities in general) are much easier to get in touch with, due to the internet, which facilitates contact between people regardless the physical distance. Many writers have Facebook accounts too. Look for their Facebook profiles, and send them out friendship invitations, and you will be surprised how many of them are actually willing to get in touch with fans. They appreciate their fans, so they will answer to the kind messages and friendship invitations. Do not be afraid to become virtual friends with your favorite writers, they are not some unattainable persons, they are quite down to earth. You may not get their response immediately, as you have to consider they receive many requests, but they will take their time to answer you. Show them your articles, your content, your writing, and they will send you their feedback.

There are many other social networks where you could promote your writing. Another popular social network is Twitter. Use these online tools to boost your writing career and to make people know about you. Just make sure you follow and respect the terms of rules on each of these networks, and also make sure you have a professional online behavior on these websites.
